Myth 1: Mixing different types/brands of gear oil with small fish feed pellet extruders. This is the most common mistake. Many people believe that "any gear oil will do," and mix gear oils of different viscosities and formulations. However, different brands of gear oil have different additives, and mixing them can cause a chemical reaction, leading to oil deterioration, decreased extreme pressure anti-wear performance, and an inability to form a stable oil film, thus accelerating gear and bearing wear. Correction: Strictly use the gear oil type and brand recommended in the equipment manual. Thoroughly clean the gearbox of any residual old oil before adding. If you need to change the brand or type, the gearbox must be thoroughly cleaned.
Myth 2: The more oil, the better for small home use dog food making machines. Some practitioners believe that "more oil means more lubrication," and fill the gear oil to the filler neck. In reality, adding too much oil will cause violent agitation of the oil in the gearbox, generating a lot of heat, raising the oil temperature, lowering its viscosity, and reducing its lubricating performance. It will also increase the operating resistance of the equipment, waste energy, and may even cause oil leakage from seals. Correction Methods: Strictly control the oil level according to the "MAX" and "MIN" markings on the dipstick. The ideal oil level is slightly above the middle. For large extrusion pellet machines, refer to the instruction manual for precise oil chamber capacity addition, avoiding reliance on experience.
Misconception 3: Adding gear oil while the dog food making machine is running. Some people add gear oil by opening the filler port while the extrusion pellet machine is running to save time. At this time, the gears inside the gearbox are rotating at high speed, and the hot oil is splashing. Opening the filler port can cause oil to splash and burn the operator. Simultaneously, the high-speed rotating gears will introduce air and impurities into the oil chamber, affecting the oil's purity. Correction Method: Add oil only after the equipment is stopped and the power is disconnected. After adding oil and verifying that everything is correct, then restart the equipment.
Misconception 4: Neglecting rust-preventive oil cleaning for small fish feed maker machines. New small fish feed making machine gearboxes usually contain rust-preventive oil. Many people add new gear oil directly on top of the rust-preventive oil, causing the new oil to mix with the rust-preventive oil and affecting lubrication. Corrective Measures: Before adding gear oil to a new machine for the first time, run it unloaded for 5-10 minutes, then drain the rust-preventive oil, flush the gearbox with a small amount of new gear oil, drain the oil again, and then add the full amount of new gear oil.
Misconception 5: Adding gear oil directly without checking its quality. If gear oil has been stored for too long or in an improper environment, it may have deteriorated or become contaminated with impurities. Adding it directly will lead to lubrication failure. Corrective Measures: Before adding gear oil, check its appearance and condition. High-quality gear oil should be transparent, free of impurities, and odorless. If it is cloudy, layered, has sediment, or has an odor, it indicates that the oil has deteriorated and must not be used. Also, check that the refueling tools are clean to avoid introducing impurities.
