If the produced pellets have a large size deviation (exceeding ±0.5mm), exhibiting deformities such as ovals, hollows, or breaks, and it is confirmed that the extruder is uniformly cooked and its parameters are normal (excluding material unevenness caused by the extruder), then the homemade dog food pellet machine is faulty. This type of fault is often caused by wear on the die orifice of the pellet mill, abnormal cutter speed, or uneven pressure from the pressure rollers. For example, after the die orifice is worn, the pellet size extruded from different orifice diameters will vary significantly. Too high a cutter speed will result in pellets that are too short, while too slow a speed will result in pellets that are too long or broken, all directly related to pellet mill malfunctions.
Troubleshooting Point 2: Loose Pellets, Poor Water Resistance, Insufficient Pellet Extrusion
If the dog food pellets are loose, crumble easily when squeezed, and have a water resistance of less than 1 hour (industry standard is 2-4 hours), and it's confirmed that the extruder has adequately cooked the material (material cooking degree ≥85%) and the raw material ratio is normal, then the pellet mill's extrusion system is faulty. The extrusion system (pressure rollers, die head) of the dog food pellet making machine is crucial for ensuring pellet compaction. If the pressure rollers are worn, the pressure is insufficient, or the die head is clogged, the extrusion force on the extruded material will be insufficient, resulting in a loose internal structure and reduced water resistance. Actual test data shows that pressure roller wear exceeding 0.3mm can lead to a decrease in pellet water resistance of over 60% and an increase in raw material loss rate of 20%. This type of abnormality is a typical signal of dog food processing machine malfunction and is not directly related to the extruder linkage, allowing direct identification of the pellet mill problem.
Troubleshooting Point 3: Rough Pellet Surface with Impurities, Inadequate Pelletizer Cleaning or Worn Components
If the dog food pellets have a rough surface, are covered with a large amount of powder, or contain metal shavings or worn parts, and raw material impurities and extruder cleaning issues have been ruled out, then the dog food extruder machine is likely malfunctioning. This type of malfunction mainly falls into two categories: First, residual material on the pelletizer die and rollers has not been cleaned in time, and after drying, it mixes with new pellets, indicating a malfunction in the pelletizer's cleaning system (such as a failure of the automatic cleaning function) or improper cleaning by the operator; second, wear on the pelletizer rollers and die, resulting in metal shavings mixing with the pellets, indicating that the components have reached their wear limit and need immediate replacement.
