A nutritionally balanced pet food formula should adhere to a reasonable ratio of the five major nutrients: protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. For example, adult dog food should contain 20%-30% protein, 8%-15% fat, 30%-40% carbohydrates, and appropriate amounts of vitamins and minerals. Formula combination tips: Use a variety of meats (e.g., chicken + beef + fish) to enhance the overall protein content; use a mixture of grains such as corn, oats, and rice to avoid nutritional deficiencies caused by a single grain; and choose a variety of colorful vegetables to supplement different vitamins. Note that heat-sensitive nutrients (such as vitamin C and probiotics) should not be added during ingredient mixing, as they will be ineffective in the high-temperature environment of the extruder. They should be added after extrusion by spraying.
The formula must be adapted to the processing characteristics of the pet food making machine for home to avoid nutrient loss or processing failure. Firstly, the moisture content of the raw materials should be controlled at 12%-15%. Too high a moisture content will result in insufficient pressure in the extruder, leading to incomplete cooking of the raw materials; too low a moisture content will increase the load on the equipment, causing the pellets to crack. Secondly, the starch content needs to reach 25%-40%. Starch is the core "binding agent" for puffing; too low a content will lead to poor pellet formation and easy breakage. If the pet is allergic to grains (grain-free formula), peas, sweet potatoes, etc., should be used as substitutes for grains, while appropriately increasing the protein content to ensure puffing effect. For example, when making grain-free adult dog food, use 50% chicken breast, 30% peas, 15% sweet potato, and 5% calcium powder. The starch provided by peas and sweet potatoes can meet the puffing requirements. During processing, the puffing machine temperature should be 135℃ and the speed 330r/min, resulting in well-formed and nutritionally balanced pellets.
The parameter settings of the small pet food making machine also affect nutrient retention and need to be precisely controlled. For formulas with high heat-sensitive nutrient content, the puffing temperature should be reduced by 5-10℃, and the speed increased to shorten the raw material residence time. For formulas with high protein content (such as cat food), the temperature needs to be appropriately increased to ensure sufficient protein denaturation and improve digestibility and absorption. After processing, the nutritional composition of the finished product can be tested by a third-party testing agency. Based on the test results, the formula and puffing parameters can be fine-tuned to ensure nutritional balance for long-term feeding.
