How To Improve Feed Pellet Quality?

Jul 02, 2025

Formula is an important factor to ensure the quality of pellets:

1

Moisture: 11%-13% for raw materials, 15%-17% after conditioning, generally 1% corresponds to 11°C;

2

Starch: The surface of raw starch is rough, the resistance to granulation is large, and the bonding performance is poor; gelatinized starch has good bonding performance and good granule quality.

3

Barley and wheat starch are better than corn starch. If the grains have been cooked before conditioning (such as drying corn), the granulation yield will decrease. Therefore, it is better not to choose dried raw materials when purchasing raw materials;

4

Protein: When the protein content in the formula is high, it is easier to granulate and the granule quality is better, because the plasticity and viscosity of protein increase after heating, which increases the granulation yield and quality; when the protein content is too high, the granulation effect decreases because the ability to absorb steam is seriously reduced and the conditioning temperature is low. In addition, when non-protein nitrogen is high, the pelleting output is reduced;

5

Fat: The right amount of fat has low friction resistance, small ring die wear, low energy consumption, and good pellet quality. It is generally controlled within 3% before pelleting;; The fat content is too high, the pellet quality decreases, and the pellets are soft and fragile. When adding high doses of oil, it is advisable to add 30% of the total amount at the mixer and spray 70% of the total amount after the pelletizer.

6

Crude fiber: The appropriate crude fiber content (3% to 5%) is conducive to the bonding of pellets, reduces the powdering rate of pellets, and increases the pelleting output. However, when the crude fiber content exceeds 10%, the bonding force between feed particles decreases due to the poor bonding force of the fiber itself, and also affects the ability of the feed to absorb steam, which reduces the hardness, forming rate and output of feed pellets, and seriously increases equipment wear.

7

Minerals: Inorganic feed has almost no bonding force, poor pelleting performance, and affects pelleting output. When the inorganic content is high, a small amount of binder (such as molasses) is generally added to the material to improve pelleting performance and increase output.
