What is biomass energy?

Nov 14, 2022

Biomass energy is the form of energy in which solar energy is stored in biomass in the form of chemical energy, i.e. energy in the form of biomass as a carrier. It comes directly or indirectly from the photosynthesis of green plants and can be converted into conventional solid, liquid and gaseous fuels, which are inexhaustible and are a renewable energy source, as well as the only renewable carbon source.

Why should we focus on developing biomass energy?

With the rapid consumption of fossil resources, ecological environment is deteriorating, the world, especially the major countries to develop new and renewable energy as the focus of a new round of industrial development, increased investment, and efforts to promote. Biomass, as the only renewable resource that can be converted into gas, liquid and solid fuels and has a two-way cleaning effect, has received wide attention from most countries in the world.

1) Renewability: Biomass energy is a renewable resource. Biomass can be regenerated through photosynthesis of plants, and is a renewable energy source with wind and solar energy.

2) Low pollution: biomass has low sulfur and nitrogen content and generates less SOX and NOX in the combustion process; when biomass is used as fuel, the amount of carbon dioxide required for growth is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted, so the net emission of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere is close to zero, which can effectively reduce the greenhouse effect.

3) Widespread distribution: geographic areas that lack coal can make full use of biomass.

4) The total amount of biomass fuel is very abundant: biomass is the fourth largest energy source in the world, after coal, oil and natural gas. According to biologists' estimation, the earth's land produces 100 to 125 billion tons of biomass per year; the ocean produces 50 billion tons of biomass per year. The annual production of biomass energy far exceeds the world's total energy demand, which is equivalent to 10 times of the world's current total energy consumption.
