The heat source required by the material, in addition to the same part as the single screw, mostly comes from the meshing gap; the meshing threads shear, squeeze and mix to generate heat and make the heat uniform. The size of the gap has a great influence on the quality of expansion. The smaller the gap, the greater the shear force, but the amount of material passing through is reduced; the larger the gap, the more material passing through, but the shear force is reduced. The forced conveying and self-cleaning characteristics of the twin screw make the material stay in the barrel for a short and uniform time; the good mixing performance of the twin screw makes the heat obtained by the material uniform in time, accelerates the maturation of the material, reduces the fluctuation of the material temperature, and improves the output and quality of the expanded product.
The twin screw extruder has the advantages of strong adaptability, sliding conveying and self-cleaning, but its structure is complex, the investment cost is high, and the corresponding maintenance and operation costs are also high. Therefore, twin-screw extruders are generally used in the production of aquatic and pet feeds with high added value, such as the production of eel, turtle and fry feed, because the prices of these products sold in the market are sufficient to recoup the costs of manufacturing products with twin-screw technology; some other special aquatic feeds such as micro-particle aquatic feed (diameter 0.8-1.5mm), high-fat aquatic feed and feed with small production volume but frequently changing formula also need to be produced by twin-screw extruders.
